The Tree of Life

Amy Voehringer

Have you ever wondered about the Tree of Life? In recent years, I have developed a peak interest in the Tree of Life as mentioned in the Bible. However, it wasn’t until recently that I truly grasped the magnitude of its symbolism throughout Scripture. In taking a closer look, the Tree of Life represents divine wisdom, eternal life, and restoration of our relationship with our Heavenly Father. Let’s explore this a little further from the beginning of Genesis to the end of Revelation.

Eternal Life

The first mention of the Tree of Life appears in Genesis 2:8-9:

The Lord God planted a garden in Eden in the east, and there he placed the man he had made. The Lord God made all sorts of trees grow up from the ground – trees that were beautiful and that produced delicious fruit. In the middle of the garden, he placed the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

Later, in Genesis 3:22-24 after Adam and Eve disobeyed God, and sinned by eating from the fruit from the forbidden tree, access to the Tree of Life was blocked to prevent them from living forever in a fallen state. Here we see the Tree of Life originally symbolized God’s intended gift of eternal life.

Wisdom & Righteousness

Moving forward to Proverbs, the Tree of Life is mentioned four times metaphorically to represent wisdom, righteousness, and fulfillment:

Proverbs 3:18Wisdom is a tree of life to those who embrace her; happy are those who hold her tightly.

Proverbs 11:30The seeds of good deeds become a tree of life; a wise person wins friends.

Proverbs 13:12Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a dream fulfilled is a tree of life.

Proverbs 15:4Gentle words are a tree of life; a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.

Restoration

Finally, in the book of Revelation, the Tree of Life reappears, signifying restoration of God’s original plan — eternal communion with Him in paradise. This is my favorite part of the Bible: the promise to be restored and with our Heavenly Father for all eternity.

Revelation 2:7Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what he is saying to the churches. To everyone who is victorious I will give fruit from the tree of life in the paradise of God.

Revelation 22:2It flowed down the center of the main street. On each side of the river grew a tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, with fresh crop each month. The leaves were used for medicine to heal the nations.

Revelation 22:14 Blessed are those who wash their robes. They will be permitted to enter through the gates of the city and eat from the tree of life.

The Tree of life ultimately symbolizes healing, continual nourishment, eternal life through God, fellowship with God, and full access to His presence — available only through Jesus Christ, His Son. From the very beginning to the promise of future redemption, it represents the divine life that God offers to all.

Thank you, Heavenly Father, for showing us Your intentions from the very beginning and making restoration possible through Jesus. May Your will be done!

In His Love,

Amy
