The Lingering Fragrance of Christ

ree

Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place. For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing. - 2 Corinthians 2:14-15

There’s nothing quite like walking into a home and being greeted by a delicious aroma. Maybe it’s fresh-baked bread, or the rich scent of savory soup (my personal favorite), or the inviting smell of freshly brewed coffee (my second, personal favorite). Some scents just seem to hug you the moment they hit your nose, filling you with a cozy, comforting feeling before you even think about it.

Similarly, the fragrance of Christ also has an impact on people. In an instant, whether you realize it or not, His aroma in you and working through you, leaves its scent in the atmosphere and spreads to the people around you…leaving an impression. And just like the smell of delicious food, people will either be drawn to it or push it away.

The Power and the Tension

Paul says that God always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses His knowledge in every place. Think about that for a moment. Everywhere you go, every conversation you have, the aroma of the knowledge of Christ is felt - and lingers long after you’re gone. And, depending on the person, that can either be a really good thing, or a really bad thing.

To the one we are the aroma of death leading to death, and to the other the aroma of life leading to life (V. 16).

When the fragrance of Christ is truly present in you, it naturally draws people in. They find themselves wanting to be around you more, seeking out conversations, a walk, or a simple coffee just to be near that peace and presence they sense coming from you. Maybe a coworker who’s going through a tough time asks if you can grab lunch, or a friend reaches out for a walk because they need to hear the calm and kind reassurance you carry. That aroma of Christ in you creates a desire to want more.

On the other hand, while the fragrance of Christ draws many in, it can also create tension with others. Some people might feel uncomfortable or challenged by how you carry yourself. The peace, truth, and conviction that naturally flows from you may offend them - His fragrance exposing what they’re not ready to face. So, instead of seeking you out, they might avoid you, or react with resistance or even hostility.

Go In Peace

So, as you step out in faith each day, remember this: you don’t have to carry the weight of sharing the gospel on your own. Christ is already at work in you, spreading His fragrance through your words, actions, and your mere presence in a place. Whether people are drawn in or pushed away, your role is simple - “just go!” Show up faithfully and let Him do the rest. Trust that His mark will be left wherever you go, and take courage knowing you’re part of something far bigger than yourself.

God Bless You,

Carole
