Look Up

Tomorrow marks the election of our 47th president, a moment that comes amid a political climate that has deepened divisions within our nation and perhaps even within our own hearts. Many of us may feel the weight of lost unity, seeking solace by surrounding ourselves only with those who share our views. But in doing so, have we grown indifferent to the democratic process that defines our system of governance? It’s easy to draw parallels to a time reminiscent of Manasseh, king of Judah, who led his people astray and into sin (2 Kings 21:11,16). In such times, what is our responsibility? How should we respond?

Christ Above

Paul’s letter to the church at Colossae gives us clear guidance on how to respond. He writes, ‘Set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things’ (Colossians 3:1-2, NIV). Paul addressed new believers who were being led astray by false teachings—deceptive philosophies, human traditions, and elemental spiritual forces (Colossians 2:8). These distractions created a mindset of needing more beyond Christ. Against this desire for more, Paul firmly reminds the Colossians that Jesus is sufficient. In Him, we have everything we need. He is the King over all creation, and through Him, we are liberated—set free from the bondage of sin.

Stop Ruminating, Start Praying

When we ruminate on politics, family matters, employment, or a host of other concerns, our minds become fixated on worldly matters rather than on things above. Spending so much time focused on the things of this world can inhibit the Spirit’s work within and through us. Romans 12:2 urges us, ‘Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.’ This renewal happens when we shift our focus upward, cultivating a deep and vibrant prayer life that strengthens our relationship with our Heavenly Father. As 1 Chronicles 22:19 reminds us, when we devote our heart and soul to seeking God, the distractions of this world fall away, and our gaze is lifted to things above.

Jesus is on the Throne

No matter what happens tomorrow, we can take comfort in knowing that God is on the throne, and it is to Him that we cast our eyes and place our hearts. Isaiah foretells, ‘For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore’ (Isaiah 9:6-7, ESV).

In Christ, we are reminded that no earthly event can shake the eternal kingdom of God, which is established in justice and righteousness. Our hope, peace, and trust rest in Him, regardless of tomorrow’s outcome.

God is still on the throne...I don't put my trust in Washington. I don't put my trust in the United Nations...I don't put trust in my money. I put my trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. - Franklin Graham

In Christ's love,
