Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. — Matthew 6:6-13
Have you ever pondered how we, as Christians, can strive to live with a kingdom mindset? Living this way means focusing on God’s priorities, values and mission. It’s about seeing things through God’s eyes and working to bring His truth, love, and justice into every area of our lives. I often ask God to remind me, daily, to consider His way before my own — a continual process of growth and surrender.
First, Jesus taught us in Matthew 6:33 to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness. This means placing God’s will above our personal goals and evaluating our decisions by asking if they align with His kingdom values. Shifting to a kingdom mindset leads us to focus on eternal impacts rather than temporary gains, dedicating our time and resources to God’s purposes and allowing that to shape our daily choices. The ultimate goal = life with Christ in eternity.
Next, to grasp God’s priorities, we need to understand His character. Consistently reading His word and meditating on Scripture helps us grow in understanding His desires for mercy, love and justice, giving us a glimpse into God’s heart for all the people of the world. Jesus reminded us, For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve (Mark 10:45). How often do we selflessly serve others? When we humble ourselves and serve people with Christ’s compassion, we reflect the values of God’s kingdom.
Regular prayer for God’s will to be done on earth is another essential for living a kingdom-focused life. In Matthew 6:10, we pray, Your kingdom come, Your will be done. This can begin with simply asking God how we can contribute to His work. As we pray, we should remain sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s guidance, asking Him to shape our hearts and empower us to fulfill God’s will. The time we spend in prayer reflects our desire to grow our relationship with God. Where we invest our time shows what we truly value.
Community is also crucial to a kingdom mindset; no one can embody the kingdom alone. Surrounding ourselves with other Christians allows us to “sharpen” each other. We encourage one another, hold each other accountable, and grow together. Through these relationships, we support and build each other up in faith.
Being a witness for Christ by sharing the good news of Jesus is another beautiful example of kingdom-minded living. We can share our faith through both words and actions, and our personal testimonies about God’s work in our lives, which can have a profound impactful to others.
God has us here for a purpose — to partner with Him in bringing His kingdom to earth as it is in heaven.
May God bless you,
Amy
