Do these words stir something within you? For me, they bring a deep, soul-settling peace—a stillness that resonates in the very core of who I am.
My heart longs for that sacred time with the Lord, yet so often, life’s demands seem to get in the way. Still, these words—at the feet of Jesus—keep calling me back. They’ve led me to reflect on how such a simple, yet profound, phrase can be woven into the fabric of my everyday life.
Last month, I wrote about the story of Martha and Mary found in Luke 10:38–41. You can find the post here: The One Thing Needed. This is how I ended that reflection:
"Let us not neglect the 'one thing needed.' May we choose, like Mary, to sit at the feet of Jesus, allowing His presence to restore, guide, and strengthen us. In doing so, we will find that our service is not a weight we carry alone, but a joyful extension of His grace at work within us."
Of course, that grace extends to us whether we sit like Mary or serve like Martha. Either way, we can be in His presence.
What Does That Mean to Me—And to All of Us?
Mary literally sat at His feet—listening. She was fully present, soaking in every word Jesus spoke. Imagine a kindergarten class, gathered on the floor around their teacher, eyes wide with curiosity and hearts open to learn. They sit attentively, thirsting for knowledge, ready to absorb every lesson. In much the same way, we are invited to gather around Jesus—to learn from Him, to rest in His presence, and to express our love for Him.
We Only Need to Open our Hearts
Like Mary, I know that to deepen my relationship with Jesus, I need to sit quietly and listen to Him. When I take that time to be still in His presence, something sacred happens. My relationship grows—not just because He’s speaking, but because of all that’s at work during those quiet moments.
Let me explain. When I sit with Jesus in prayer, I honor Him as the Son of God. I praise Him, I lift up my heart, and I share both my joys and my struggles—trusting fully that He hears me. I thank Him for all He has done for me—for His sacrifice on the cross that redeems me, and for the many blessings He continues to pour into my life.
It’s in this place of stillness and surrender that intimacy with Jesus takes root. And in that closeness, I find the freedom to approach Him with honesty, with boldness, and with a heart wide open.
Quiet Time Suggestions
These suggestions are offered as encouragement to anyone who desires to bring new depth and meaning into their time with Jesus. Many of us are juggling young children, caring for aging parents, or facing a host of other daily demands. Yet, God is abundantly full of grace and mercy for each of our unique circumstances. As long as we have a heart to sit at the feet of Jesus, He will make a way to draw us closer to Him.
Choose a specific time and place free from distractions: Create a sacred space for your time with the Lord. Read Matthew 6:6
Journal your thoughts: Writing helps me gather my scattered thoughts, focus more intentionally on prayer, and reflect on what God is showing me.
Examine your thoughts, actions, and the condition of your heart: Self-examination invites the Holy Spirit to bring clarity and correction.
Repent of sin and receive God’s mercy: Confession is not about guilt, but about grace. Let Him cleanse you and make you new.
Read Psalm 32; Titus 3:4–6; Ephesians 2:4–5
Open your heart to His truth: Meditate on His Word and let it speak life, love, and direction into your heart.
Read 1 John 4:10 – Love
John 5:24 – Life
John 14:15–16 – Obedience
Hebrews 7:25 – Jesus’ Intercession
Titus 2:11 – Salvation
Dwell in His presence through prayer: Offer praise and thanksgiving as you rest in His nearness.
Read Psalms 16, 131, and 149
The quiet time spent at Jesus’ feet is always worth the effort. It leads to the renewal of our spirit and draws us into a deeper, more fulfilling relationship with Him.
