Therefore, God dealt well with the midwives, and the people
multiplied and grew very mighty. And, so it was, because the
midwives feared God, that He provided households for them.
~ Exodus 1:20-21
Dietrich Bonhoeffer once said, “Silence in the face of evil is evil itself.” Two women in
the story of Moses faced that choice – to comply and stay silent in the face of evil or act
courageously and do what they knew was right by God.
Efforts to break the Hebrew people’s spirit through harsher bondage did not work. In fact,
the more they were afflicted, the more they multiplied and grew. Shiphrah and Puah,
two prominent Hebrew midwives living in Egypt during this time, were ordered by
Pharaoh to kill all Hebrew baby boys upon birth – in an effort to control the population
and any future threat they would pose.
They defied Pharaoh’s decree and bravely chose to continue delivering infant Hebrew
sons. Their act of courage pleased God, and He blessed them. Not long after … Moses
was born.
What’s the point of the story? It’s quite simple really:
Choose this day whom you will serve …
~ Joshua 24:15
