Spiritual Friend

Recently, I was conducting a spiritual inventory, asking myself how far I am truly willing to extend myself for a friend. I know from experience that I would turn the world upside down for my family, and yet, am I not called to exemplify that same degree of sacrifice for my friends in Christ?

In Mark 2:1–12, we learn about four friends who carried their paralyzed friend on his mat to where Jesus was teaching because they believed Jesus could heal him. I envision each friend taking a corner of the mat, carrying him a long distance. When they approached the large crowd, they did not turn back. Instead, they pressed forward and devised a bold plan to carry their friend to the roof of the dwelling place, where they tore through it, and gently lowered him down to Jesus.

I am blown away by the determination and faith of these four friends. They risked criticism, embarrassment, and the destruction of property that did not even belong to them. Together, they demonstrated faith, love, and persistence as they worked in unity to bring their paralyzed friend into the presence of Jesus. Scripture tells us that when Jesus saw their faith, He healed him.

We can help others come to Jesus through our interactions and through our prayers. God honors the faith of those who carry others in prayer. When we intercede, we can open doors that personal effort alone cannot. As these friends worked together, they shared the responsibility and showed that with faith, obstacles can be overcome. I once overheard a powerful quote: “Spiritual breakthrough often requires unconventional obedience, and persistence is often the proof of genuine faith.”

When we consider this story, we see a picture of what the church is called to be. The church is called to see the need, carry the burden, overcome barriers, and deliver people to Jesus.

We are the church!

Something to Consider

Who is God asking you to carry in faith right now? Are you willing to overcome obstacles and break down barriers to bring them to Christ? When we ask the Lord to direct our steps, we must also be willing to take those steps in faith, trusting that He will always find a way to accomplish His will.

In Christ’s Love,

Amy
