Saying Yes to the Lord

Tracey Sayler

What does it mean to say yes to the Lord? Saying yes begins with surrendering to the Lord followed by a personal decision to obey God’s commands, trusting in His plan through faith, and living according to the teachings of Jesus. Two powerful examples of saying yes can be found in Scripture: Abraham in the Old Testament and Mary in the New Testament.

Can you imagine the depth of wonder and faith that both Abraham and Mary must have felt as they were called to say yes to the Lord? First, Abraham, then known as Abram, was asked to leave behind everything familiar and journey to an unknown land. Later, he faced the unimaginable test of being asked to sacrifice his beloved son, Isaac. How difficult it must have been for Abraham to say yes and yet, he trusted and obeyed. Then in the New Testament, we hear of the angel Gabriel visiting Mary, announcing that she would be the mother of the Son of the Most High. Her response was also a profound yes as she declared, "I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled" (Luke 1:38).

The freedom of saying Yes

By continually saying yes to God—when He calls us to go, to serve, and to love — we become co-laborers with Christ in the work of the Holy Spirit in this world. In these moments, we have the opportunity to fully surrender to Him, embracing the freedom granted us through the death and resurrection of Jesus. Through our obedience to God’s Word, we unleash a kingdom spirit that brings glory to the Most High.

What draws our hearts to say Yes to the Lord?

Saying yes is agreeing with God — a commitment to follow His commands. God is always faithful to us, and His Word assures us that He will finish the good work He began in us. Our yes means choosing to follow Him, even in our imperfections. Through our willingness, He uses us to advance His kingdom.

By saying yes we surrender to Jesus' authority, placing our hope, trust, and loyalty in His loving hands. It’s a submission to His will and teachings. When we believe that Christ is sufficient, we place Him above all else. 2 Corinthians 3:5 says, “Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God.” Choosing anything or anyone over Him means settling for less than His best.

In this world, choosing Jesus brings comfort, peace, joy, and abundant blessings. The blessings we receive from God far exceed anything we could achieve through our own strength. Saying yes to Him opens our lives to His transformative and redemptive power.

This song beautifully captures the heart of surrender and the freedom found in saying yes to the Lord. Enjoy!

In Christ’s service,

Tracey
