Musical Connection

What is it about music that allows it to touch our hearts in ways words alone often cannot, while also bringing people together in a unique and powerful way? It has a way of communicating beyond words, fostering connection and creating bonds between individuals and communities.

For example, when the national anthem is played, many of us feel a deep love for our country and a sense of unity with those around us. A favorite love song may transport us back to precious memories with a spouse, stirring feelings of affection and gratitude. And a hymn sung in adoration can draw our hearts closer to our loving Father, strengthening our fellowship with Him.

What does music do for you?

According to the on-line site, Healthline, “music is a powerful, low-effort tool that benefits your mind, body, and emotions. Scientifically proven to stimulate the brain, lower stress hormones (like cortisol), and release ‘feel-good’ chemicals (like dopamine and serotonin), it is widely used to improve well-being.”

On a personal level, music helps us remember information and stories. Beyond its ability to help us remember, music can profoundly affect our emotional well-being by releasing brain chemicals that leave us feeling calmer, more connected, and less burdened by anxiety or depression.

As I was writing this devotional, I spoke with my son, Jackson, about his own experience. He recently stepped into a new role at another church, and the added responsibilities on that particular day made it difficult for him to slow down and connect with God in prayer. He shared that he remembered something he did as a new believer before he had learned much about prayer; he would simply sing. That very morning, he had done the same thing.

As he worshiped through song, he found that his mind stayed focused. Rather than being pulled in a dozen directions, he felt present before God. The lyrics led him to reflect on God's goodness and faithfulness. By the time he finished singing, he felt more relaxed and ready to enter into prayer. He even took time to look up the Scriptures reflected in the song, allowing God's Word to sink deeper into his heart. Here is a link to the song he was singing.

His story reminded me that worship is often a doorway into God's presence. Music has a way of quieting our distractions and turning our attention toward the Lord. It helps us remember who He is and what He has done.

The Role of Music Among God's People

Throughout Scripture, we see God's people using music as an expression of praise, thanksgiving, lament, and trust.

The Psalms are filled with songs that helped believers draw near to God in every season of life.

We learn about the many instruments available to God's people in Daniel 3:5.

In 2 Samuel 6, King David sang and danced with joy as the Ark of the Covenant was returned to Jerusalem.

We also see music used as a source of comfort and peace when David played the lyre for King Saul.

In Exodus 15, Moses and Miriam led the people in a song of praise after God delivered Israel through the Red Sea.

These are just a few examples of the many ways music is woven throughout the biblical narrative. Again and again, we find God's people responding to His presence, power, and faithfulness through song.

Music is more than entertainment, it is an expression of worship, remembrance, gratitude, and trust in the Lord. What song brings you closer to God? Is it a quiet hymn that calms your heart? An upbeat worship song that fills you with joy? Or, perhaps, different songs minister to you in different seasons.

Today, consider setting aside a few moments to listen to or sing a song that points your heart toward Christ. Allow the music to become more than background noise. Let it lead you into worship, reflection, and deeper communion with the One who created both music and the soul that responds to it.

In Christ's love,

Tracey
