Almost Persuaded

Then Agrippa said to Paul, “You almost persuade me to become a Christian.”

-Acts 26:28

Have you ever shared the gospel with someone and felt your words hit their heart…only to watch them stop just short of surrender? It’s one of the most frustrating realities we face as followers of Christ; you lay out the truth clearly, answer their questions, and show them the love and hope of Jesus For some of you this may be on more than one occasion with the same person. You might even see moments when they seem moved, their hearts stirred, their eyes opened. And yet, despite all the reasoning, the evidence, the conviction…they hesitate. They come right up to the edge of faith, almost persuaded, but the lure of the world around them, holds them back.

This is not a new pattern. Scripture shows it has been happening for centuries. In Acts 26, after hearing Paul testify about Jesus, King Agrippa admits, "You almost persuade me to become a Christian.” He wasn’t mocking Paul. He wasn’t even indifferent. He came face-to-face with the truth, and chose to turn away. Herod too. He loved to hear John the Baptist preach and was clearly stirred, yet he refused to act (Mark 6:19-20).

They heard the truth. They felt its pull, but they quenched its power - and now - they are without excuse.

Is it because the cost is too high? Because they cling to power or position? Because they cannot let go of sin or personal desires? Because pride blinds them? Or because they misunderstand the message? Either way, it’s a tragedy in the deepest sense. They came face-to-face with life itself…true life…and turned away. They had the opportunity to know the living God, fully, and chose instead the fleeting security of the world.

The Valley of Decision

That small distance between almost and fully is where many people live. And this is precisely why we don’t stop praying. I think of that sobering passage in Joel, Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision! For the day of the Lord is near in the valley of decision (Joel 3:14).

Joel describes “multitudes in the valley of decision” as the day approaches. It’s a powerful picture of people standing at a crossroads. They see enough to know that God is calling. They feel the tug of truth on their conscience, but the pull of the “here and now” keeps them from stepping forward. They linger in a space where belief is possible, but commitment is delayed. And this is where we come in.

Our Call

Don’t let the “almost persuaded” discourage you. Keep praying. Keep speaking the truth in love. Keep pointing others to Christ with patience and faithfulness. Keep planting seeds, and watering the ones others planted. Don’t give up. The gospel is power — it’s power! It is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith” (Romans 1:16-17). Do not underestimate the power of the gospel. The Spirit is at work even when we cannot see the full effect. Every word, every conversation, every faithful act matters. Someone’s heart can shift in the blink of an eye from almost persuaded to fully surrendered.

The valley of decision is real, but so is God’s power through His Spirit. Hold fast. And remember, it’s worth it because, There is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents (Luke 15:10).

God Bless You,

Carole
