Family Discipleship

Discipling our children is no easy task, yet it is our greatest privilege and responsibility! As a parent, which has been ordained by God, we are to deliberately disciple our children.

In Deuteronomy 4:9-10 we are commanded to make them (his laws and statutes) known to your children and your children's children...so that, they may learn to fear me (with awe-filled reverence and profound respect)...so that they may teach their children. (AMP).

Disciple means to follow, to be a learner; a lifelong commitment to seek after, learn from and stay close to the Lord. Making disciples is, after all, the Greatest Commission given to us by our Lord Jesus (Matthew 28:18-20).

It is my hope to come alongside others who might find themselves in the thick of parenting, who might be looking for new ideas, or getting on a new path with their children - not as an expert, but as a mentor and coach. This is a place where we could

come together with the Holy Spirit to discern deliberate ways in which you can grow up your kids to be a disciple of the Lord.

Remember, it is God who saves by grace, through faith, not by your parenting ability. It is, however, our jobs as a parents to see that our children are taught the truth of His gospel, so that they too may know Him, and make Him known to others!

How will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him if they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone teaching? Romans 10:14

Discipleship Mentoring

In Matthew 28:18-20, Jesus commissions the 11 disciples to go and make disciples of all men. You and I as disciples are also called to this same imperative. To be a disciple of Jesus means to follow Him and His teachings. He invites us in Matthew 11:29 to take His yoke upon you and learn from Him. It is an invitation to trust Him personally, be in relationship with Him, and share in the life of abundance He came to give! He is giving us the opportunity to learn from Him until Christ is formed in us! Ephesians 4:19

Discipleship mentoring is a means to talk with someone else about discipleship and be a mentor. Often times when we are trying to come along side others we are met with resistance. By sharing and searching the scriptures with a mentor, you are likely to find a new path forward around obstacles, allowing you to speak into the lives of others.

I hope that my heart for discipleship mentoring will show others how to forge that path forward to truly make disciples of all men!

For those of you that don't know, I'm Karen Petrik, JCM team member! I have been married for close to 35 years. I have three grown children and one grandchild. I have lived in Colorado for over 45 years and love most things outdoors!

Most of my professional career has been in Fitness and Wellness where I still instruct group fitness classes and offer individual Health Coaching. However, I am most thankful that God called me to be a wife and mother and now a grandma! It has been perhaps the biggest blessing, as well as the greatest challenge. God has definitely shown me what it looks like to surrender my will and follow Him.

He has also given me a great passion to dig deeper in the Word! Thankfully, He has allowed me to facilitate a small group/Bible study for the last 15 years where we have done just that.

God lays out so many things for us in His word to guide and benefit us as we grapple with this sometimes crazy maze of parenting and life. For me, the first place I had to look was at myself and the shortcomings I had before I could began to speak into others. Through these experiences, God has given me the desire to come along side people who might feel stuck in their own personal journey and growth in the Lord, as well as those who might feel up against a wall in their parenting.

I am humbled to be a part of JCM and am looking forward to meeting any parents or individuals who might need assistance and encouragement!
